Water (wet / hydronic) underfloor heating
Water systems circulate warm water from your boiler or heat pump through pipes embedded in the floor screed or in insulation panels. They cost more and take longer to install, but the running cost per unit of heat is lower because they are usually heated by a gas boiler or a heat pump rather than electricity.
- Best for: whole-house projects, new builds, large open-plan areas
- Floor build-up: larger — pipes need a screed or a panel system
- Response time: slower — think in hours, so it suits homes that are heated continuously

Daily running cost ≈ system output (kW) × hours in use × your unit rate.
A 1.5 kW electric bathroom mat run for two hours a day at 28p/kWh costs roughly 84p a day. The same bathroom heated by a water system fed from a gas boiler typically costs less per unit of heat, but only makes sense if you are heating the whole house anyway.
